Navodaya Movement

Navodaya Movement is a project of the Mar Thoma Church initiated in 2012 for the upliftment of the Transgender Community in Mumbai. In 2017, as part of the Birth Centenary commemoration of the Padma Bhushan awardee, Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Chrysostom Mar Thoma Valiya Metropolitan, Navodaya Movement has expanded it's reach to Kerala to engage in National level. The activities of Navodaya Movement among the transgender community, vocational training programs aimed at uplifting and empowering transgenders individuals through training were held.

Transgender community is one of the most marginalized communities in the country because they do not fit into the general categories of gender of male and female. Consequently they face problems ranging from social exclusion, discrimination, lack of education facilities unemployment, lack of medical facilities. Navodaya movement, Mumbai from last many years is reaching out to the transgender community to work for the rehabilitation and sensitization of transgenders.

Health Care Facilitation

Transgender health care is having medical institution, communities and individual approach the care of transgender people.   In the pandemic situation as we were not able to organize any medical camps due to Lockdown but Medical Support were given to the needy transgenders by supplying medicines and healthcare equipment’s to their need.

Awareness/Sensitization Programmes

Transgender persons are frequently subjected to transphobic harassment. One of the largest reasons that transgender people face inequality is due to lack of public understanding of Transgender identity. There are programs in place to educate the public about transgender persons. As the world has shifted to digital media, Navodaya has been able to achieve its goal of sensitizing society through online gatherings by using a virtual platform.

Education:

Equality and non-discrimination are foundational principles of international human rights. To make transgender aware of their rights Navodaya is supporting them by educating them. So Navodaya facilitates transgenders to complete their formal education and for this we motivate and create awareness on the need for education and prepare channels for admissions in institutions.

Keeping in mind the health scenario in the state and also understanding the urgent needs of the women, the programs were modified to provide the much needed assistance and support to the women.
